Buy Confederate Rose plants for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

Confederate Rose is a beautiful old-fashioned flowering shrub known for its large, showy hibiscus-like blooms that change color as they age. Flowers typically open white, then gradually turn light pink and finally deeper pink, often giving the plant several flower colors at once. This fast-growing shrub can develop into a large, multi-stemmed specimen and makes an impressive late-summer and fall focal point in Southern landscapes.

Plant Details:

  • Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub or small multi-stemmed tree

  • Botanical Name: Hibiscus mutabilis

  • Family: Malvaceae

  • Mature Size: Approximately 10–12 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide

  • Growth Rate: Fast

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering

  • USDA Zones: 7–9

  • Bloom Time: Summer through fall, with especially showy late-season flowering

  • Flower Color: Flowers generally open white and change to light pink and then deeper pink as they mature

  • Flower Size: Approximately 3–6 inches across

  • Foliage: Large, bright green leaves that give the plant a lush, tropical appearance

  • Soil: Performs best in fertile, organically rich soil but adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soils

  • Water: Prefers consistent moisture and can tolerate periodically wet soil once established

  • Landscape Uses: Specimen plant, flowering shrub border, cottage garden, pollinator garden, privacy planting, and Southern-style landscape

  • Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.

Pollination:

Confederate Rose does not require another Confederate Rose nearby in order to bloom. The plant produces its ornamental flowers independently.

If seed production is desired, insects such as bees can transfer pollen between flowers. For normal landscape use, customers do not need to purchase a second plant as a pollinator.

Best Pollinator Partners:

No specific companion variety is required. For a pollinator-friendly landscape, Confederate Rose can be planted near other flowering shrubs and perennials that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

North Florida Growing Note:

Confederate Rose is very well suited to North Florida and the Gulf Coast. USDA Zones 8b–9a fall comfortably within its recommended range. In colder winters, stems may suffer freeze damage or die back, but established plants can often return with vigorous new growth when warm weather arrives. Flowers develop on new growth, so winter pruning can also help rejuvenate older plants.
